SAT

The Scholastic Assessment Test, or SAT for short, is a standardised test that is frequently used in the US for college admissions. However, because the SAT is approved by many universities throughout the world, including 45 prominent universities in India (details are provided below at the bottom), Indian students have started taking it as well over the years.

The College Board, the organization responsible for conducting the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), has announced that the test will be fully digital for Indian students starting in 2023. The digital SAT will be administered using a computer instead of paper and pencil, allowing for faster score reporting and increased accessibility for students.

The move to digital testing is expected to benefit Indian students in several ways. The faster score reporting will allow students to make timely decisions about college applications, and the increased accessibility will make it easier for students in remote or underprivileged areas to take the test. Additionally, the College Board has stated that it plans to offer the digital SAT at a lower cost than the paper-and-pencil test, making it more affordable for Indian students.

Test and Score

  1. The SAT exam is a computer-based test and is divided into multiple-choice questions and grid-in questions (where students have to enter their answers in a grid). There is no negative marking for wrong answers.
  2. The SAT exam syllabus includes topics related to Reading, Writing, and Mathematics covering algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  3. Starting in March 2023, all students taking the SAT at international test centers will have to take the digital test on their own laptop or tablet, using a custom-built digital exam application that they’ll download in advance of test day. The SAT will be administered exclusively at schools and testing centers.
  4. Students can practice for the digital SAT using Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy. Students can receive free practice – anytime, anywhere. Digital SAT practice material will be added to Official SAT Practice. At that time, we’ll also have full-length practice tests available in the exam application.
  5. The duration of the digital SAT is 2 hours and 14 minutes.
  6. The new digital SAT will be composed of two sections: (i) a combined Reading and Writing section with 54 MCQs. It will have 5 long passages in the Reading section and 4 long passages in the Writing section with multiple questions tied to each passage. Reading and Writing passages may contain informational graphics, and (ii) a Math section allotted 70 minutes duration with 33 MCQs and 11 student-produced response questions. All questions are intermixed and calculators are permitted.
  7. Each section will have two modules with 30-35 minutes per module. Your performance on the first module of each section will determine the difficulty of the questions in the second module of that section. The better you do in the first module, the harder the questions will be in the second module.
  8. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section has a score range of 200-800, while the Math section also has a score range of 200-800. The essay section is scored separately on a scale of 2-8. The total score ranges from 400-1600.
  9. Students will receive their digital SAT scores just a few days after taking the test.

Registration and Test Dates

Indian students can register for the SAT online through the College Board website. The test is usually offered seven times a year in India: in March, May, June, August, October, November, and December. Students can choose the test date and center based on their convenience.

Preparation Tips

To prepare for the digital SAT, students can use online resources such as practice tests, study guides, and instructional videos. They can also enroll in SAT coaching classes offered by various test-prep organizations. The College Board has also developed its own suite of online tools and resources, including a free practice platform called Khan Academy, which is designed to help students prepare for the SAT. Preparing for the SAT requires time and effort. Here are some tips to help Indian students prepare for the test:

  1. Understand the test format and question types.
  2. Practice regularly using official SAT practice tests.
  3. Take timed practice tests to improve speed and accuracy.
  4. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and work on improving them.
  5. Seek help from tutors or online resources if needed.

Score Reporting

Indian students can send their SAT scores to universities of their choice through the College Board website. Students can send up to four score reports for free while registering for the test. Additional score reports can be sent for a fee.

Fee

The fees for the SAT exam in India for the year 2023 have yet to be officially announced by the College Board. However, the fee structure for the SAT in previous years can give an approximate idea of the expected fees for the upcoming year.

In 2022, the registration fee for the SAT (without essay) was $55 (approx. Rs. 4,080) for Indian students. For the SAT with Essay, the registration fee was $70 (approx. Rs. 5,180) for Indian students. These fees are subject to change for the upcoming year, depending on various factors such as currency fluctuations, exam format, and other changes made by the College Board.

It is important to note that these fees do not include additional charges such as late registration fees, change fees, or fees for other optional services such as score reports and question-and-answer services. It is advisable for students to keep track of the latest updates on the official College Board website and plan their registration and payment accordingly to avoid any additional charges.
